Hanover Insurance Removed from Charged Insurers in Harner Auto Glass Suit

The controversial, much-publicized suit from David Harner against several auto glass TPAs and insurers has just undergone a change: Hanover, one of the insurers listed in the suit as being among the insurers who failed to pay claims due, has been removed from the list.

This is the latest development in what is turning out to be a true David vs. Goliath story, as Harner, the owner of an auto glass business in Westchester, takes on some of the biggest auto insurers and TPAs in the business. Safelite and its parent company are named in the suit, for instance, as indeed are LYNX and its own parent company, PGW. The allegations are myriad, and they echo some of the most common allegations being made by many independents in the auto glass industry against the big boys, from failure to pay allegations to charges of unfair business practices.

The removal of Hanover from the failure to pay list is the second such removal of the insurer from a list having to do with allegations by Harner. In July, Harner also removed Hanover from the list of insurers that he claimed had committed a breach of contract, being careful to stipulate that said removal would have no bearing on other actions being taken against the insurance company.

Further comment has yet to be found regarding this recent development, at least from the concerned parties themselves, but observers say it may be that Hanover has taken action to pay the claims alleged by Harner since the filing of the suit, as indeed happened with another company in the list of names Harner claimed to have perpetrated a breach of contract. This other company, Unitrin, was taken off the list by Harner subsequent to its payment of the fees due to Harner’s company.

What is really getting people’s attention about Harner’s case, though, would be the allegations he makes about how insurers are providing a set of scripted statements to agents to use with policyholders that tend to guide said policyholders towards preferred auto glass repair shops and away from independents. This is an allegation that has been levelled specifically against LYNX, with Harner going so far as to actually provide script examples in his case.

Why does this get so much attention? Because many independents in the auto glass industry have been making similar claims for some time now, saying that the TPA-insurer-repairer relationships being built by the bigger companies in the trade are beginning to constitute unfair business practices that see majority of clients being diverted by insurance handlers to companies that are actually affiliated with their own, leading to a kind of monopoly that excludes smaller players from the game. While this is still under contention, Harner’s case is being expected to provide some prime instruction once an outcome is finally found, which is why so many people in the industry are watching it.

JN Auto Glass Repair Wins Award from MassRecycle for Windshield Replacement Recycling Policy

The Massachusetts-based auto glass repair shop, JN Phillips Auto Glass, just received an accolade from the MassRecycle 2011 Awards for Product Stewardship, referring to the company’s recent policy of recycling all glass taken from windshield replacement jobs.  The company was awarded the gold medal in the category out of over 50 nominees.

The auto glass repair company actually put its windshield replacement recycling programme a year ago, in November of 2010.  The programme, called GreenShield, was born out of a concern for the number of windshields being dumped in city landfills and taken out of the recycling chain far too early.  According to executives from JN Phillips, their own customers had been asking for some time already about possible options for windshield recycling, and the company had been searching for a solution as a result.

The company then went through various options to see which would be best, specifying that it tried to look into conducting the recycling process internally, then having the recycling phase carried out by a local partner, then looking at recycling processes of varying efficiency.  Eventually, the auto glass repair brand alighted upon a company located in the Midwest that apparently had a process for crushing laminated glass and separating the glass components from the inner, plastic (PVB) layer.  According to the JN Phillips managers, this was a crucial factor in their decision to partner with that company: they had been searching for a procedure that would yield as much recyclable (reusable) material as possible from the used windshields, and most other companies were only providing methods that would yield reusable glass.  In contrast, the company JN Phillips selected actually provided the PVB layer as well, enabling recyclers to reuse it as an industrial adhesive.  This meant that all layers of the windshields would be reused, leading to far greater benefits for the environment.

Customers have been informed of the company’s policy for a while now, and most have been eager to get on board when getting a windshield replacement.  This year, the company was lauded for its environmental efforts not only through the MassRecycle honour but also through an Official Citation from the local State Senate.  Managers of the company have already accepted the awards and have spoken about them to the press, noting that they are very proud to have been the recipient of such esteemed honours.  The auto glass repair company has thus already been lauded by both government and its peers in the business community for its “green” alternatives and the manager of the GreenShield programme has already stated that the company will only be inspired to try out better, even more beneficial ways of serving both the consumers and the environment as a result.

U-Haul Partners with Independent Colorado Auto Glass Repair Business

U-Haul, the DIY moving solutions provider, has just recently partnered with an independent auto glass repair business in Colorado to provide moving equipment rentals to supplement its auto glass repair and replacement services.  The independent company, AutoGlass USA, has been run by Mike Zenhari since 1998 and the new partnership looks to expand both companies’ businesses by a large and profitable margin.

The partnership with the auto glass repair provider has been touted by U-Haul as just another piece of evidence proving its commitment to corporate sustainability.  Corporate sustainability is a strategic outlook in business that privileges “green” business activities as well as community-oriented tactics.  Openness is heavily emphasized in this business model, and corporations are encouraged to reach out to their communities.  In a nutshell, then, corporate sustainability is more or less interchangeable with business ethics that promote a better outlook for the future for everybody.

U-Haul’s promotion of its partnership with Colorado-located AutoGlass USA has to do with the community-oriented side of its corporate sustainability programme.  Quality, independent, and equally corporate sustainability-concerned companies are the types of partners U-Haul tends to look for, in an effort to build a stable and dependable network of partnerships all around the country.  The president of the South Colorado office of the company, Trey Bryan, spoke positively of their new partnership with the auto glass repair provider, saying that the company was proud to be affiliated with independent business dealers like AutoGlass USA’s Mike Zenhari.

U-Haul’s sustainability programme has also ensured that the company moves ever forward in its development of moving and packing solutions that do not harm the environment.  For example, the company makes use of heavy-duty boxes for packing that happen to be “green” solutions, because they are made up of as much as 90% recycled material.  Moving boxes are also reused if possible, and the moving pads the company provides are fashioned out of recycled material.  Even the packing peanuts used are fully recyclable, which makes a significant improvement over the old polystyrene peanuts used by most other movers.  U-Haul actually uses only the biodegradable packing peanuts now, having made the decision to use it exclusively over 15 years ago.

The partnership is likely to see higher customer traffic for U-Haul’s business associate too.  Auto glass repair shops typically do not see as many customers as they should because many people require reminders about the dangers of damaged auto glass before taking action and getting a crack fixed.  People who come in to inquire about the U-Haul rentals might react to their exposure to the auto glass section of the business by inquiring about windshield repairs and similar services, which would only be all to the good for AutoGlass USA’s business.

 

Auto Glass Broken on Vehicles in Car Burglaries during Jacksonville Fair

The Jacksonville Fair last Friday turned out to be not too lucky for several attendees: at least six cars had their auto glass broken when the owners returned after visiting the fair, and several valuable items were stolen from the vehicles.

According to the police reports, there were at least eight victims in total. The auto glass on the victims’ cars was shattered and various objects were stolen. One victim, Valisa Winding, reported that the criminals actually attempted to enter from one side of her car based on the pry marks on the door, then resorted to simply breaking the rear window’s auto glass. Winding’s purse had been left in the vehicle, and it was stolen.

Another victim, Kerra Nicholas, reported that a camera was stolen from her vehicle. Yet another, Katelyn Kuhl, noted that credit cards had been taken from her car and that various purchases had already been charged on it by the culprits by the time they got in touch with the credit card company, showing the thieves to be very fast operators indeed.

The parking lot where the robberies happened was on Albert St., very near the actual fair’s location. Given that people were charging a mere $5 for parking in it, most of the victims had been quick to take the opportunity of parking in the lot, only to find their cars damaged and their possessions missing after their day at the Jacksonville Fair. Police say that the victims should not have parked there.

Everyone knows the issue with parking nowadays: it is getting increasingly harder to find a parking space in today’s choked up towns and cities—and with more cars being produced and more people buying their own vehicles, parking space availability is not getting any better. As such, a lot of companies and property owners have turned to offering their free lots as parking spaces for a fee, and actually make quite a good bit of money from that. However, most people are disgruntled by what they perceive to be the high prices of parking in such locations, and often go in search of cheaper spaces at cheaper lots.

The problem with cheaper parking spaces is that they usually skimp on the security and lighting, according to police officers. Hence, a parking space that costs you a mere $5 would be likely to have no security guard and bright lights with it. As such, police advise that people search for more secure parking spaces and garages, even if it does mean paying a higher price in exchange. They also say that you should put all your precious belongings in the boot (trunk) of the car before leaving it, just to make sure that prospective thieves see nothing tempting to them through the auto glass.
